The Malaysian Biotechnology Corporation is tasked with raising awareness and the visibility of the Bioeconomy in Malaysia. The Bioeconomy aims to produce energy, food and other products and services using renewable natural resources.
In the USA, Bioscience companies have created over 110,000 high paying jobs in the last 10 years and the industry now employs more than 1.6 million people. The Bioscience industry has expanded its economic output 17% since 2007, twice the increase of the rest of the private sector.
The industry may be the solution to a large number of environmental and economic challenges, including global warming, fossil fuel and other resource efficiency as well as energy and food security.
A number of key focus areas have been identified in Sarawak and RECODA is collaborating with key entities such as the BiotechCorp and the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre to maximise the State’s potential in the industry.
The Bioeconomy Day at the Pullman Hotel, Kuching on 8th January 2016 was the first step in the process of raising awareness on the industry in Sarawak and getting more participation from the private sector.
YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Amar Wilson Baya Dandot the CEO of RECODA was a speaker at the event and RECODA was also one of the exhibitors, showcasing progress and development within SCORE.
The guest of honour was the Chief Minister of Sarawak, YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Haji Adenan Bin Haji Satem who was represented by YB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Alfred Jabu Anak Numpang.
The event was also attended by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Wilfred Madius Tangau and his deputy Datuk Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Assistant Minister of Industrial Estate Development Datuk Peter Nansian, Mosti secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur and its deputy secretary-general Dr Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim and BiotechCorp chief executive officer Datuk Dr Mohd Nazlee Kamal.
