At the Telang Usan Kedaya Cultural Festival in Long Mekabar, Baram, we celebrated not only our vibrant cultural heritage but also the life-changing projects that the Highland Development Agency (HDA) has brought to the communities in the region. Upgraded roads now connect Long Mekabar, Long Tikan/Long Jekitan, Long Semiang, and Long Silat, benefiting rural communities in these areas.
This improved connectivity not only makes commuting easier but also enhances trade and economic activities. The upgraded infrastructure facilitates the efficient transportation of goods, supports local businesses, and saves time for residents when bringing their products to market. The road improvement project to Long Selaan, nearing completion, will further contribute to improved accessibility and economic development, especially for riverine communities in the surrounding areas.
HDA has undertaken 51 projects, with 29 dedicated to roads and bridges, 20 to water supply, and 2 to electricity supply. Eleven projects have successfully concluded, easing travel challenges for communities in Bario Highlands, Apoh-Tutoh, Long Lama, Tinjar and Upper Baram.
At the festival, Deputy Chairman for HDA, Datuk Gerawat Gala, reiterated the Sarawak Government’s commitment to infrastructure development and integrating socio-economic programmes to improve the quality of life of communities in the Baram Highland.
HDA, a regional development agency under RECODA, will also continue its main focus on implementing infrastructure projects, particularly road and water supply projects, he said during his dedication at the three-day festival.
Also gracing the event was Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who officially launched the cultural festival.
