BALEH: Baleh hydroelectric power project will boost energy security through its generation of endless renewable power when commissioned by 2026.
This was impressed upon Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg during his visit to the project site yesterday.
Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) said the Baleh HEP, as the largest civil works project by the state-owned company, would serve as an additional milestone in the renewable energy and development strategy of Sarawak.
Once the Baleh HEP is fully commissioned, Sarawak will have sufficient energy to cater for the anticipated rapid growth in organic and industrial demand for electricity.
Baleh HEP will join Sarawak’s stable of hydropower plants that includes Batang Ai, Murum and Bakun and strengthen Sarawak’s aspiration to become a regional powerhouse of renewable and affordable energy.
SEB is also developing the state’s abundant hydropower resources based on the guiding principles of sustainability in building prosperity for Sarawakians by 2030.
Abang Johari was accompanied during his visit by Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri James Jemut Masing, Utilities Minister Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kumbong and State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion.
They were joined by Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi and group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.
Prior to his arrival at the site, Abang Johari flew over the Baleh HEP for an aerial view of the work progress, including the construction of the tunnel portal diversion.
The visit was followed by a presentation by Baleh HEP project director Tan Hang Kiak on the milestones in the management of the project.
